A total of 1,192 more people have been found to have been infected with COVID-19, while 23 others have died from the disease over the past 24 hours, Turkish Health Minister Fahrettin Koca announced on Sunday.

According to a chart posted by Koca on Twitter, the total number of cases in the country has risen to 187,685, while the death toll has reached 4,950 with the latest additions.

Over the past several days, the number of new infections is in a downward trend, although it was on an upward trajectory after an easing of anti-coronavirus measures by the Turkish government as of June 1.

The chart indicated that 1,412 patients have recovered in the last 24 hours.

As he did on Saturday, Koca also announced the number of patients in intensive care in some provinces where the number of infections has increased over the past days.

“Despite an increase in the number of cases in some of our provinces, the number of patients in intensive care is low. There are 84 [intensive care patients] in Ankara, 46 in Konya, 43 in Bursa, 22 in Batman, eight in Siirt and five in Van. The number of recovered patients is 320 higher than the number of new cases today. We need to increase the difference by complying with [anti-coronavirus] measures,” tweeted the minister.

Turkey conducted 40,496 tests for the coronavirus over the past day, bringing the overall number of tests carried out so far to 2,945,240.

The chart showed that 160,240 people have recovered in Turkey since the start of the outbreak, while 803 patients are in intensive care, 327 of whom are on ventilators.

Turkey reported its first COVID-19 case on March 11. The country eased preventative measures at the start of June, opening shopping malls, cafes, restaurants and mosques.
