Fenerbahçe footballer, medic have contracted COVID-19, club announces

Turkey’s Fenerbahçe football club announced on Wednesday that a footballer and a medical specialist on the team tested positive for the coronavirus.

“Our player and medical staff member were admitted to a hospital for further treatment,” a Fenerbahçe statement posted on social media said.

Yesterday Galatasaray coach Fatih Terim said he was infected with COVID-19.

Göksel Gümüşdağ, chairman of İstanbul’s Başakşehir football club and a relative of the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, was also diagnosed with the disease on Wednesday.

Gümüşdağ’s initial test had been negative, Turkish media reports said.

The Turkish Boxing Federation also announced on Wednesday that a national athlete and a boxing coach had tested positive for coronavirus.

Boxer Serhat Güler and coach Seyfullah Dumlupınar were undergoing treatment at a hospital, a statement on the federation website said.

As of Tuesday, Turkey had 1,872 confirmed cases of coronavirus and 44 deaths, according to the health minister.

First seen in the Chinese city of Wuhan, COVID-19 has spread rapidly around the world, infecting nearly 440,000 people worldwide and killing more than 19,750.
