European Council President Charles Michel on Tuesday called on Turkey to respect a 2016 deal with the European Union in which it agreed to contain the flow of migrants to Europe in exchange for billions of euros in aid, according to Reuters.
He said it was important for Europe to protect its border.
Michel was in Greece with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Parliament President David Sassoli to tour the Greek-Turkish border, the scene of clashes between Greek soldiers and migrants in the last three days.
The visit is seen as a show of solidarity with Greece as it struggles to hold back the new migrant tide following Turkey’s decision to relax controls on migrant movement toward the EU, the Greek Kathimerini daily said.
