Turkey deports extremist who fought in Syria back home to Germany

Turkey on Wednesday deported an extremist who fought in the Syrian civil war to his home country of Germany, the Interior Ministry said, according to the state-run Anadolu news agency.

It did not specify which terrorist group the fighter was affiliated with, but in recent months Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) militants have been repatriated by Turkey.

The issue of the handling of ISIL members and their families detained in Syria — including foreign members of the terrorist group — has been controversial, with Turkey arguing foreign-born terrorists should be returned to their countries of origin.

Ankara has said several European countries resisted its efforts to send ISIL members back home but that it will nevertheless press forward with its deportations.

Turkey deported almost 780 foreign terrorists back to their countries of origin in 2019, Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu said ahead of the new year.
