400 Syrian officers to receive training in Turkey for policing in Tal Abyad

AFRIN, SYRIA - MAY 25: Syrian cadets, trained with the support of the Turkish Police Academy, attend an oath-taking ceremony at Afrin Police Station as Syria's Afrin is cleared from YPG within the "Operation Olive Branch" by Turkish Armed Forces and Free Syrian Army (FSA) in Afrin, Syria on May 25, 2018. Total of 620 cadets took oath and began their duty in the region.

Some 400 Syrian police officers will start patrolling in Turkish-held Syrian territory after receiving training in Turkey, the pro-government Daily Sabah reported on Monday.

The police officers arrived in the southern Turkish province of Adana to receive training in police regulations, response to social unrest, discipline, the disposal of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and operations in residential areas as well as applied training in other matters, the İhlas news agency said.

Officers who successfully complete the training will start working as police in Tal Abyad and surrounding towns and will be dispatched in different units, the report said.

In addition to counterterrorism, police will also address smuggling, organized crime and other issues.

Turkey had previously trained Syrians for police work in the Syrian city of Afrin.
