Prosecutor orders 88 former, active duty military members detained over Gülen links

Turkish Military officials attend ceremony at Ataturk mausoleum to mark 94th Anniversary of Turkey's Victory Day in Ankara, Turkey on August 30, 2016.

The İzmir Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office on Friday issued detention warrants for 40 active duty and 48 former military members as part of an investigation into the faith-based Gülen movement.

The police raided residences in 33 provinces, including İzmir, and detained at least 60 suspects accused of membership in the movement, the state-run Anadolu news agency reported.

Turkey accuses the Gülen movement of masterminding a 2016 coup attempt, although it strongly denies any involvement. Since the failed coup more than 17,000 military members have been fired by government decrees.
