Greece calls on UN to condemn Turkey-Libya maritime deal

Must read

Greece on Tuesday called on the United Nations to condemn a disputed maritime jurisdiction deal between Turkey and Libya as “disruptive” to regional peace and stability, the government spokesman said, AFP reported.

Greece “wants the deal to be brought to the attention of the UN Security Council so it can be condemned,” Stelios Petsas told a news conference.

“This agreement was compiled in bad faith,” he added.

“It violates the [UN] Law of the Sea. The sea zones of Turkey and Libya do not meet, and nor is there a sea border between the two states.”

Turkey reached a maritime agreement with the UN-backed Libyan government based in Tripoli on Nov. 27 that was condemned by Egypt, Greece and Cyprus.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Monday said Turkey and Libya could conduct joint natural gas exploration in the eastern Mediterranean.

Ankara and Athens are at odds due to Turkey’s gas exploration off Cyprus.
