Germany says man deported by Turkey not ISIL member

Must read

The German government has announced that a German citizen who was deported by Turkey for alleged membership in the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) is not actually an ISIL member, Deutsche Welle reported.

Turkish Interior Ministry spokesperson İsmail Çataklı said on Monday that Turkey has begun to deport ISIL fighters to their home countries, adding that it had deported a US citizen who fought for ISIL.

Another alleged ISIL member who holds German citizenship was also deported by Turkey on Monday; however, German Foreign Ministry spokesperson Christofer Burger announced at a news conference on Monday that the German citizen is not a member of ISIL.

He said German authorities had been providing the person with judicial assistance in Turkey.

When asked by a reporter whether individuals deported by Turkey would be subject to judicial proceedings in Germany, spokesperson for the German Interior Ministry Steve Alter said Germany has a general attitude about these cases and that judicial action would certainly be taken if the actions of these individuals constitute a crime under German law.
