EU council condemns Turkey’s incursion into northeast Syria

Must read

The Foreign Affairs Council of the European Union on Monday condemned Turkey’s military action in northeast Syria, which it said undermines the stability and security of the entire region and aggravates the humanitarian situation in the war-torn country.

In a press statement released after a scheduled meeting in Luxembourg, the council urged Turkey to cease its unilateral military action in northeast Syria and to withdraw its forces.

“It significantly undermines the progress achieved so far by the Global Coalition to defeat Da’esh,” the statement read, referring to the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

The council also recalled the decisions taken by some EU members to halt arms exports to Turkey in reaction to the offensive.
