Minister claims number of PKK militants in Turkey decreased below 600

Turkish Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu

Turkish Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu on Tuesday claimed there are less than 600 terrorists inside the country, referring to Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) militants, the state-run Anadolu news agency reported.

“We are at the peak of our determination and success in eliminating terrorism,” Soylu said in Ankara.

In February he told reporters that the number of PKK terrorists inside Turkey had decreased from to 700 from 15,000 thanks to counterterrorism operations.

However, the PKK is still active in Turkey, as three Turkish soldiers were killed in a clash with terrorists on Aug. 22 in the Silopi district of Şırnak province.

The PKK, listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the US and EU, has been waging a bloody war in Turkey’s Southeast since 1984.
