Afghanistan completes transferring Gülen-linked schools to Turkey’s Maarif

Must read

Afghanistan has completed transferring all 13 schools affiliated with the Gülen movement to Turkey’s state-run Maarif Foundation, according to the Anadolu news agency.

Maarif’s Afghanistan directorate announced that the five remaining schools were transferred on Friday.

The two countries signed an agreement on the schools in February 2018.

Turkey accuses the faith-based Gülen movement of orchestrating a 2016 coup attempt, although it strongly denies any involvement.

After the abortive putsch, Turkey accelerated its efforts to weaken the movement’s global influence.

The movement operated schools in more than 100 countries before the coup.

The Maarif Foundation was established in 2016 and recently received some $100 million in additional funding from Turkey’s Education Ministry.
