Turkey’s nationalist opposition party leader Meral Akşener on Tuesday said that “winter is coming” for President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s party, referring in English to the world-famous American TV series “Game of Thrones” tagline.
Her speech at the İYİ (Good) Party parliamentary group meeting was mainly about the poor economic performance of the Erdoğan government.
Akşener’s party formed an alliance with the Republican People’s Party (CHP) and supported the CHP’s İstanbul mayoral candidate, Ekrem İmamoğlu, in the local elections.
İmamoğlu won the March 31 election by a razor-thin margin, but the Turkish election authority canceled the results. He won by 9 percent in a repeat vote on June 23.
“I want to say wholeheartedly that on June 23 the Turkish public made history,” she said just before congratulating her team members for their hard work during the campaign.
