Prosecutors seek to launch proceedings against 25 members of Turkish Parliament

Must read

The Turkish Parliament Speaker’s Office has received 44 summaries of proceedings drafted by Turkish prosecutors against 25 deputies including leaders of the two opposition parties, Turkish media reports said on Monday.

With the summaries of proceedings the prosecutors are asking parliament to remove the immunity of the deputies named, including main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu and Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Co-chairpersons Pervin Buldan and Sezai Temelli.

Eighteen of the deputies facing prosecution are from the HDP, four from the CHP, two from the Communist Party of Turkey (TİP) and one from the İYİ (Good) Party.

Multiple summaries of proceedings have been filed against some deputies.

The prosecution of members of parliament has been possible since the CHP and the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) lent support to a 2016 proposal submitted by the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) on removing deputies’ immunity from prosecution.

The immunity of all deputies who face investigation was lifted in May 2016.
