İdris Özyol, a journalist who writes for the local Yeni Yüzyıl newspaper in southern Antalya province, was assaulted by unknown parties Wednesday evening in front of his place of employment after receiving threats from a local politician, the Evrensel newspaper reported.
He was hospitalized as a result of injuries sustained to the head and chest.
The identity of the assailants is unknown.
The Progressive Journalists Association (ÇGD) released a statement condemning the attack and calling for an investigation into Talu Bilgili, a local nationalist politician who recently threatened Özyol over a city council disagreement.
“Several newspapers had reported on Bilgili’s threats, of which Özyol was among the targets,” the ÇGD said. “Today, those threats have found their address.”
The incident took place just a few days after another journalist and TV host Yavuz Selim Demirağ was beaten up in front of his house.
Six people who were detained in connection with the attack were quickly released, which led to a public outcry.
