The official Twitter account of the İstanbul Municipality has unfollowed opposition mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu following a decision by the country’s election authority to cancel and re-run the İstanbul mayoral election, the Artı Gerçek news website reported on Tuesday.
The municipality also unfollowed main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) Chairman Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, İyi (Good) Party leader Meral Akşener and the new mayors of Ankara and İzmir, who were elected from the ranks of the CHP.
Instead, the municipal account retweeted a post announcing the decision by the Supreme Election Board (YSK).
On Monday, upon applications by the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), the YSK canceled the İstanbul mayoral results, citing “irregularities.”
It revoked İmamoğlu’s mandate and announced a new election on June 23.
