Critical Turkish theologian briefly detained during Ramadan event

İhsan Eliaçık, a critical theologian, wearing a red t-shirt, was taken into police custody on Monday.

Turkish theologian and author İhsan Eliaçık was briefly detained on Monday at a Ramadan event held in İstanbul, Sputnik Turkish service reported.

He was released today along with seven others who were also detained.

Eliaçık, who is known for his critical stance towards the Turkish government, was in İstanbul’s famous İstikal Street to participate in a fast breaking event held by the “Anti-capitalist Muslims,” a group that synthesizes the precepts of Islam and leftist political discourse.

Several individuals at the scene who reported the detentions on Twitter claimed that Eliaçık briefly passed out as a result of what they called a violent police intervention.
