Osman Sarıgün, who on Sunday assaulted main opposition party leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, has been arrested and later released pending trial, the T24 news website reported.

Sarıgün was seen punching Kılıçdaroğlu at the funeral of a Turkish soldier who was killed by terrorists near the Iraqi border.

He was arrested by a court after his detention on Monday. After his lawyer’s objection, he released pending trial on Tuesday evening.

Five others who allegedly took part in the incident have been detained and are being questioned at a gendarmerie station.

Kılıçdaroğlu was physically attacked by a group during the funeral on Sunday.

The group got out of control, and Kılıçdaroğlu had to take shelter in a nearby house and later left the scene in an armored vehicle provided by the police.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan commented on the attack on Twitter a day after it took place.

Describing it as “protests against Kılıçdaroğlu that turned into acts of violence,” Erdoğan said that the incident was being thoroughly investigated and that he does not condone any form of violence.
