Rumor of dispatch to Europe sparks false hope among Syrian refugees in Turkey

A large crowd of Syrian refugees gathered on Thursday outside a nongovernmental organization in southeastern Turkey after a rumor circulated claiming that Syrian refugees would be sent to European countries.

Turkish media published photos of a large group of Syrians gathered in front of the Association for Solidarity with Syrian Refugees and Migrants in in Şanlıurfa.

Even after the NGO denied the rumor of sending any refugees to Europe, the crowd refused to leave the area and had to be dispersed by the police.

More than 3 million Syrians who fled the war in their home country were registered in Turkey as of 2019.
