Turkey’s main opposition to launch fund to raise money for damage verdicts against chairman

Turkey’s main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) has decided to establish a fund to pay for damages that Chairman Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu is has been ordered by a court to pay President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and other government officials.

The fund will deduct 5,000 Turkish lira every three months from the salaries of party deputies, the Cumhuriyet daily reported on Wednesday.

The deputies approved the offer unanimously after some party members suggested helping their chairman with the damages.

Kılıçdaroğlu was sentenced to pay Erdoğan 130,000 lira in damages after exposing Erdoğan’s family members’ tax-haven-based offshore companies. The CHP chairman has been ordered to pay a total of 828,000 lira in damages in a variety of cases.
