Eleven Syrian refugees were injured on Sunday night in an attack in Turkey’s southeastern Gaziantep province, the Gazete Duvar news website reported.

According to Duvar, the incident was a continuation of an altercation that took place on Dec. 23 in the same province in which two Turkish men were stabbed. People believing Syrian refugees to have been responsible for the attack started an online chat group on WhatsApp to call for retaliation. Ali Bağcı, the father of the two injured men, reportedly asked people to calm down. Yet on Sunday night a group assaulted a number of Syrians on İnönü Street, injuring 11 of them, including two who sustained gunshot wounds.

Police have detained 45 suspects in the attack.
