Turkish journalist Ece Sevim Öztürk, who produced investigative reports on the 2016 coup attempt in Turkey, on Tuesday was sentenced to three years, one month and 15 days in prison on charges of supporting a terrorist organization.
Öztürk was released pending appeal by the İstanbul 37th High Criminal Court.
She was detained on June 8 and arrested after 13 days in police custody.
As editor-in-chief of the Çağdaş Ses news website she produced detailed reports scrutinizing the abortive putsch in 2016.
When her reports intensified doubt about the government narrative concerning the coup attempt, she became a target of the pro-government media.
A prosecutor accused her of supporting the Gülen movement, which was blamed for the failed coup and named a terrorist organization by Turkish authorities.
The indictment claimed that her documentary on activities within the Turkish Navy on the night of the coup created the perception that the putsch was “fiction.”
Turkey is the leading jailer of journalists in the world and is ranked 157th among 180 countries in the 2018 World Press Freedom Index released by Reporters Without Borders (RSF).
