Turkish court hands down 32 life sentences in coup trial

The İstanbul 32nd High Criminal Court on Monday handed down life sentences to 32 suspects of a 2016 failed coup attempt in Turkey for violating the constitution, the state-run Anadolu news agency reported.

On the night of the abortive putsch incidents had taken place at the Kuleli Military School and Çengelköy Police Department in İstanbul that left eight people dead.

A total of 114 suspects were tried for involvement in the incidents.

The court decided not to sentence 64 suspects, including 57 privates and seven military school cadets.

The coup attempt on July 15, 2016 caused the death of 249 people and the wounding of thousands.
