Harsh media reaction to sexist voting comment prompts university dean to resign

A professor and the dean of the aviation and space sciences faculty at Turkey’s Necmettin Erbakan University resigned on Wednesday after his announcement that he would not vote for any female candidate in municipal elections scheduled for March 2019 led to harsh criticism in the media.

Professor Mehmet Karalı defended his position by arguing that it is much more important to be a good housewife and raise children than being a mayor, minister or businesswoman.

“I find certain policies towards family wrong. It is much more important to raise good a good child and be a good housewife than being a minister, mayor or a successful businesswoman. In local elections, I will not vote for any female candidate,” Karalı tweeted on Friday after saying that he had an announcement to make.

He has since then shut down his Twitter account.
