Three hundred ninety-three women in Turkey were killed in incidents of domestic violence over the last 19 months, according to the Interior Ministry.
Opposition deputy Ömer Fethi Gürer had submitted a parliamentary question for the Interior Ministry regarding victims of domestic violence.
In its answer the ministry indicated that 133,809 women reported that they were subjected to domestic violence in 2017.
The number for the first seven months of 2018 is 96,417.
“According to the data, 400 women were subjected to violence every day, while two women were murdered every three days because of it. These are just the reported cases. We believe the actual situation is even worse,” Gürer said in a statement.
Domestic violence targeting women is a hot topic in Turkey right now as famous pop singer Sıla filed a criminal complaint with the public prosecutor in İstanbul against her ex-boyfriend, actor Ahmet Kural, who she claims physically assaulted her.
While many women in the country showed their support for Sıla and praised her for coming forward, Kural posted a video on social media apologizing to Sıla and all other women.
