Two people in Turkey’s Tekirdağ province were arrested on Wednesday on charges of insulting President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on social media, the Diken news website reported.

Local gendarmes raided the two men’s houses, and a court in Tekirdağ arrested them immediately.

One of them was reportedly previously detained on the same accusation last year.

According to the Turkish Penal Code (TCK) insulting the president carries a sentence of between one and four years.

In 2016, 3,658 people were charged with insulting the president.
