Turkey jails 3 suspects in US Embassy attack

Must read

An Ankara court on Saturday jailed three men suspected of involvement in a drive-by shooting at the US Embassy on Aug. 20, the state-run Anadolu news agency reported, citing judicial sources.

A total of six suspects were detained in connection to the incident, but only Ahmet Çelikten, Osman Gündaş and Ersin Bayramhas were jailed pending trial by a court, said the source, who asked not to be named due to restrictions on speaking to the media.

According to the Ankara Governor’s Office, Çelikten and Gündaş confessed to their involvement in the attack.

The attack took place at 5:30 a.m. local time, when six shots were fired from a white vehicle at the US Embassy’s main entrance.

It came in the midst of a row between Turkey and the US over a court decision to put an American pastor under house arrest after almost two years in pretrial detention rather than release him as demanded by the US administration.

Ankara police later said the suspects were drunk at the time of the attack.
