Seventy-one percent of German citizens oppose a proposal to extend financial aid to Turkey, according to a recent poll, Deutsche Welle Turkish service reported on Wednesday.

The poll, published in the Die Welt newspaper and conducted on 5,051 participants on Aug. 20-21, indicated that a vast majority of Germans oppose a proposal floated by Socialist Party (SPD) leader Andrea Nahles to lend financial aid to Turkey, which has recently been suffering an economic crisis.

Twenty-two percent were in favor of the proposal, while 7 percent were undecided.

The poll also asked participants about their political affiliations, showing that some 46 percent of SPD voters backed Nahles’ idea, while 42 percent were opposed.

Also, 53 percent of Green Party voters, 67 percent of Left Party voters, 69 percent of Christian Unity Parties (CDU) voters, 80 percent of Free Democrat Party (FDP) voters and 94 percent of Alternative for Germany (AfD) voters objected to the idea.

Chancellor Angela Merkel said earlier this week that Germany had no immediate plans to grant financial aid to Turkey.

Nahles on Wednesday reiterated her proposal, stressing that the interests of Germany and Europe dictated that Turkey should not experience economic turbulence.

Turkey has been suffering from a currency crisis as the country’s national currency, the lira, has lost its almost 50 percent of value in 2018 alone.
