World leaders congratulate Erdoğan on election victory

World leaders have congratulated President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for his election victory in Sunday’s elections, with Hungarian Prime Minister Victor Orbán being the first and so far only European Union leader to offer congratulations, according to the state-run Anadolu news agency.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, Azerbaijani President İlham Aliyev and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, leaders of close allies of Turkey, also congratulated President Erdoğan.

Nechirvan Barzani, prime minister of northern Iraq’s Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza and British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson separately congratulated Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu on Erdoğan’s election victory.

Later, Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev, Kyrgyz President Sooronbay Ceenbekov, Bosniak leader Bakir Izetbegovic and Albanian premier Edi Rama congratulated him.

In a phone call Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas congratulated Erdoğan on “the success of the Turkish democratic process and his victory in the presidential elections,” the official Palestinian News Agency (WAFA) said.

Other international messages of congratulations came from Greek Foreign Minister Nikolaos Kotzias, Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, Pakistani President Mamnoon Hussain, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, Kosovar President Hashim Thaci, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Macedonian President Gjorge Ivanov.

In a telephone conversation Qatar Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani also congratulated Erdoğan on his success in the presidential and parliamentary elections, according to Turkish sources.

Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah also sent a cable congratulating Erdoğan on his party winning the presidential and parliamentary elections.

“Congratulations to President @RT_Erdogan on his successful presidential election. The government & people of Somalia congratulate the people of Turkey on their historic presidential and parliamentary elections. Turkey a valuable partner of Somalia,” Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo tweeted.

Bahraini King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa congratulated Erdoğan on his election success and underlined the deep-rooted ties between Turkey and Bahrain, according to the Bahraini News Agency.

Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood also released a message congratulating Erdoğan on his election success.

Rached Ghannouchi, leader of the Ennahdha Movement in Tunisia, also extended greetings to Erdogan.
