Prominent Turkish thinker Şerif Mardin dies at 90

World-famous Turkish thinker, sociologist, political scientist and academic Şerif Mardin, who was referred as the “doyen of Turkish sociology,” died in İstanbul on Wednesday at the age of 90.

Born in İstanbul in 1927, Mardin went to Galatasaray High School and then continued his secondary education in the US.

After obtaining a bachelor of arts in political science at Stanford University in 1948, Mardin received a master of arts in international relations from Johns Hopkins University in 1950. He later completed Ph.D. in political science at Stanford in 1958.

His doctoral dissertation was published by Princeton University Press under the title “The Genesis of Young Ottoman Thought” in 1962.

Mardin worked 13 years in the faculty of political science at Ankara University until 1973 and then joined Boğaziçi University as founder of the department of political science, where he worked from 1973 until 1991. He was a professor in the faculty of arts and social sciences at Sabancı University from 1999 until his passing.
