Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is planning to visit Iran soon, Iran’s ministry of foreign affairs announced on Monday, Azernews reported.

“We expect that President Erdoğan will visit Tehran soon. We will make an official statement as soon as the details and date of the visit are agreed upon,” Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qassemi told the Iranian Labor News Agency (ILNA).

The announcement was made following a meeting between Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Ebrahim Rahimpour and Turkish Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Ümit Yalçın in Tehran.

The new developments in Syria and Iraq concerning the Kurds have been pushing Turkey and Iran to work closer together.

Maj. Gen. Mohammad Bagheri, the chief of staff of Iran’s armed forces, paid a historic three-day visit to Turkey in mid-August.

During his first visit to Ankara, the Iranian commander met with Chief of General Staff Gen. Hulusi Akar, President Erdoğan and other senior officials.

Turkey and Iran agreed on intelligence sharing and cooperation in the fight against terror during the visit by Maj. Gen. Bagheri.

Following Bagheri’s visit, President Erdoğan said a joint military operation with Iran against the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in the Kandil Mountains along the Iraq-Iran border was on the government’s agenda.
