Şırnak court arrests peace activist for ‘insulting’ President Erdoğan

Must read

A Şırnak court has ruled for the arrest of Yannis Vasilis Yaylalı, a peace activist and conscientious objector, for “insulting” President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and disseminating terrorist propaganda for the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

According to the Cumhuriyet daily, Yaylalı was sent to pretrial detention at Şırnak Prison upon a ruling by the Şırnak Penal Court of Peace on Sunday.

Yaylalı previously came to public attention for peaceful protests he organized after Turkish military jets bombed 34 Kurdish villagers from the Roboski district on Dec. 28, 2011. The initial statements claimed that the villagers were thought to be terrorists traveling along the Iraqi-Turkish border.

Six years into the investigation, no concrete findings have been presented to the public on the details of the Uludere incident.
