A school principal in the southern province of Adana sent a message from instant messaging application WhatsApp to his students, inviting them to a rally President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was to hold in the province on Friday.

Adana Büyük Selçuklu Anatolia High School principal Abdullah Adana wrote in his message: “Dear students, you are invited to a mass inauguration ceremony along with your families by the President of the Turkish Republic in Adana tomorrow. P.S. Classes scheduled for tomorrow have been delayed to another day. There will not be any classes tomorrow.”

The message has led to unease and criticism among some students and their families.

President Erdoğan has been holding rallies under the cover of inauguration ceremonies across the country for an upcoming referendum in which a constitutional reform package, which will introduce an executive presidency in Turkey, will be voted.
