Interior Ministry to pay TL 707,000 in compensation to Gezi victim’s family

An Eskişehir court has ordered Turkey’s Interior Ministry to pay compensation in the amount of TL 707,000 to the family of Ali İsmail Korkmaz, who was killed during mass demonstrations sparked in protest of government plans to demolish Gezi Park in İstanbul’s Taksim neighborhood in the summer of 2013, according to a story in the Hürriyet daily on Monday.

The court ruled that TL 650,000 in non-pecuniary damages and TL 57,000 in pecuniary damages would be paid to the family.

Korkmaz, who was 19, was beaten to death on June 2, 2013, by a group of officers and civilians Eskişehir during the 2013 Gezi Park protests. He died on July 10, 2013, after spending 38 days in a coma.

Last December, the Supreme Court of Appeals upheld a verdict against two police officers who were found guilty of killing Korkmaz.

Officers Mevlüt Saldoğan and Yalçın Akbulut, who were both sentenced to 10 years, 10 months in jail, will serve prison terms that were handed down by a Kayseri court after the case was re-evaluated.
