Kılıçdaroğlu says gov’t to give citizenship to 4 mln Syrians

CHP leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu

Chairman of the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu said on Saturday that the government would give Syrian refugees in Turkey citizenship after a critical referendum on April 16 that will introduce an executive presidency in the country if approved, news website t24 reported.

“Who brought the 4 million Syrians in? Did the parliamentary system bring them? We will give them citizenship if the result of the referendum is yes, they say,” said Kılıçdaroğlu in during a meeting in Diyarbakır.

Describing Kılıçdaroğlu’s statement “dangerous” in a speech in Kahramanmaraş on Saturday, Deputy Prime Minister Veysi Kaynak said: “We do not need to wait for the referendum to give citizenship to Syrians. There is no such decision, either.”
