The man who attacked Sinan Oğan, a politician who was expelled from the opposition Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), while Oğan was campaigning for a “no” vote in an upcoming referendum was released on Sunday after a brief detention.
The attacker, identified as Ömer Faruk Y., rushed on to the stage and attacked Oğan at İstanbul’s Bahçeşehir University.
Oğan resumed his talk after security removed the man. Ömer Faruk Y. was released by a prosecutor on Sunday.
Oğan had opposed the MHP’s chairman, Devlet Bahçeli, and ran against him for leadership of the party before he was expelled.
“Those who fooled this young man and sent him here are actually hurting our party,” Oğan said in criticism of his fellow party members.
