HSYK changes positions of 454 judges, prosecutors

Prosecutors and judges stood up and applauded President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan when he entered the hall and when he finished his address during a ceremony on Sept. 1 opening the new judicial year, which was held for the first time at the presidential palace and protested by the main opposition leader and the head of the bar association because of the venue of the event.

Turkey’s Supreme Board of Judges and Prosecutors (HSYK) issued a new decree on Monday, changing the positions of 454 judges and prosecutors amid criticism of a blow to judicial independence, CNNTürk reported.

According to the report, 427 judges and prosecutors have been transferred to different jobs within the criminal justice system. Eight-eight judges and prosecutors who returned to office at the invitation of the government were among those 427.

The positions of 27 prosecutors and judges in the administrative justice system have also been changed.

With the new decree, the HSYK has also appointed 100 investigative judges to the Supreme Court of Appeals.

Last week the HSYK dismissed 227 more judges and prosecutors over alleged links to the Gülen movement, bringing the total number of purged jurists to 3,866 since a failed coup on July 15.
