Turkey and Ukraine have agreed to allow their respective citizens to cross mutual borders with only identity cards, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu said on Friday.

“We want to increase the number of reciprocal visits and tourists. We want more contact between our peoples. Therefore, we have completed preparations to allow the citizens of both countries to travel without passports, instead only using identity cards. We will finalize this before summer,” said Çavuşoğlu after meeting with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin.

The Turkish minister underlined that the number of Ukrainians who have visited Turkey had reached 1.25 million, showing a 50 percent increase.

Çavuşoğlu and Klimkin attended the signing ceremony of a consultation plan between the foreign ministries of the two countries in Kiev.

Çavuşoğlu also met with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko in the capital city.
