MHP’s Bahçeli calls emergency party meeting

Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahçeli on Saturday called an emergency party meeting as Turkey gets ready to vote in a referendum on constitutional amendments that will greatly expand the power of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Bahçeli will meet with MHP deputies in Konya Feb.10-12 to evaluate the referendum process.

Bahçeli is under fire from some MHP deputies and voters over his support for the constitutional amendments, which have raised concerns about a one-man regime in Turkey.

MHP deputy chairman and İstanbul deputy Atilla Kaya resigned as deputy chairman on Jan. 4 due to a difference of opinion with the party over the switch to a presidential system in Turkey.

Burhan Kuzu, an advisor to President Erdoğan and a Justice and Development Party (AKP) İstanbul deputy, said on Dec. 28 that the MHP will always have a voice in state governance since it has supported the ruling AKP on the draft constitution.
