Turkey’s population nears 80 million, İstanbul remains most crowded city

Turkey’s population saw an increase of more than 1 million in 2016, reaching 79,814,871, while İstanbul remained the country’s most populous city, according to data released by the Turkish Statistics Institute (TurkStat) on Tuesday.

There are 14,804,116 people living in İstanbul, which makes up 18.5 percent of Turkey’s total population. There was a 1 percent increase in the city’s population over 2015.

According to TurkStat, the annual population growth rate in 2016 was 13.5 per thousand. This figure was 13.4 per thousand in 2015.

Men made up 50.2 percent of the total population, while females accounted for 49.8 percent in 2016.

The least populated province of the country was the eastern province of Tunceli with 82,193 people.
