US President Barack Obama, who is going to leave office on Jan. 20, spoke with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan by telephone to offer his condolences for the victims of a nightclub attack in İstanbul on Sunday.
In a White House statement on Tuesday, Obama also welcomed efforts by Turkey to facilitate a nationwide cease-fire in Syria.
Thirty-nine people died and 69 were wounded when a gunman attacked people celebrating the new year at the Reina nightclub on the shores of İstanbul’s Bosporus at around 1 a.m. on Sunday.
