Co-chairperson of the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Selahattin Demirtaş, who was jailed last month, was taken to Trakya University Hospital on Wednesday, upon his request for a health checkup, the Anadolu news agency reported.

Gendarmes implemented heightened security measures when Demirtaş arrived in the hospital in Edirne.

HDP spokesperson Ayhan Bilgen told reporters following a Central Executive Board (MYK) meeting that Demirtaş had a coronary artery spasm on Saturday in Edirne Prison, where he is incarcerated.

“We have concerns related to the health situation of our co-chair. We will apply to the Doctors’ Union to request Demirtaş’s examination in an appropriate hospital and under the supervision of independent doctors,” said Bilgen.

He also noted that although Demirtaş suffered another coronary artery spasm earlier and had a medical report showing this, he has been deprived of the necessary medical services.

Demirtaş along with the HDP’s other co-chairperson, Figen Yüksekdağ, and eight other deputies were arrested last month on the grounds that they refused to testify in court as part of a terrorism probe.
