Academic bothered by rising literacy rates appointed to Higher Education Board

Must read

Professor Bülent Arı, who had earlier said he was bothered by an increase in literacy rates in Turkey, has been appointed as a member of the country’s Higher Education Board (YÖK).

Arı said on live TV in March that he feels very uncomfortable with the rising literacy rate in Turkey since he trusts the wisdom of the “ignorant and uneducated” people of Turkey. Arı, who was at the time the deputy rector of Sabahattin Zaim University, resigned as a result of outrage sparked by his comments.

YÖK is Turkey’s official board for higher education, regulating the rules and the functioning of all universities in the country.
