CHP leader criticizes media ban on Adana dormitory fire

Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu

Leader of the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu on Wednesday criticized a decision by Turkey’s Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) to impose a media ban on a tragic fire in Adana province that killed 12 people.

The fire, which broke out at a dormitory in the Aladağ district, claimed the lives of 10 schoolgirls, one child and one instructor.

RTÜK imposed a ban on coverage of the fire by the media so that “the environment of peace and security is not spoiled across the country.”

“Why are you imposing a media ban? Don’t you want facts be learned by the people? On what grounds are you enforcing a media ban? It is impossible to understand,” said Kılıçdaroğlu.

It is usual for Turkish authorities to impose media bans following the occurrence of tragedies and terror attacks in the country.
