A total of 22.7 million foreign tourists came to Turkey in the first 10 months of 2016, compared to 36.2 million visiting the country in the same period of 2015, according to data from the country’s Culture and Tourism Ministry.
The drop in the number of foreign visitors to Turkey is 31.3 percent between the January-October period of 2015 and 2016.
The number of Russian tourists visiting Turkey fell by 78.3 percent this year over the same period of 2015.
Relations between Turkey and Russia were strained after Turkey downed a Russian jet that violated its airspace on Nov. 24, 2015.
The country that sent the highest number of visitors to Turkey between January and October is Germany, with 3.63 million, followed by Georgia with 1.87 million and the UK with 1.65 million.
Turkey has been shaken by series of bombings across the country by outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) terrorists. Some ISIL attacks targeted tourists in İstanbul.
