Poll: Majority of Turks think Turkey moving away from EU

A total of 75.3 percent of Turks think that Turkey has been moving away from the European Union, while 44.3 percent believe freezing negotiation with the EU would be a positive step, an ANDY-AR survey, conducted on 1,516 people in 26 provinces between Nov. 15-17, shows.

According to the opinion poll published by the Habertürk daily on Sunday, 47.3 percent of Turks think stopping the negotiation process with the EU would be a negative development for Turkey. Only 19.9 percent of Turks believe that Turkey has not been drifting away from the EU.

A full 58.6 percent of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) electorate and 54.2 percent of opposition Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) supporters welcome freezing ties with the EU, while 75.5 percent of main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) voters and 81.9 of pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) supporters think it would be a negative development, according to the poll.

A total of 48.2 percent of respondents aged between 25-34, 53.9 percent aged between 35-44, 50.9 percent aged between 44-54 and 54.1 percent aged over 55 believe freezing negotiations with EU would be bad for Turkey.

Some 86.7 percent of participants do not see the EU as being sincere about the refugee crisis, the survey shows.

Similarly, 86.6 percent of respondents support improving relations between Turkey and Russia.
