With new state of emergency decrees issued on Tuesday, the Turkish government has shut down nine more local newspaper operating in various regions of Turkey, bringing the total number of media outlets closed in the aftermath of a coup attempt on July 15 to 195.
According to the two new decrees, numbered 677 and 678, nine papers — Ekspress Gazetesi in Adana, Türkiye Manşet Gazetesi in Çorum, Dağyeli Gazetesi in Hatay, Akis Gazetesi in Kütahya, İpekyolu Gazetesi Ordu, Son Dakika Gazetesi in İzmir, Yedigün Gazetesi in Ankara, Haberexen Dergisi in Samsun and Batman FM in Batman — have been shut down for alleged “membership in terrorist organizations or organizations [or] groups that were listed by the National Security Council as acting against the security of the state.”
The decrees, which have the force of law, were published in the Official Gazette on Tuesday.
