Court releases jailed HDP Co-chair Demirtaş’s lawyer on probation

Must read

Pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Co-chair Selahattin Demirtaş’s lawyer Levent Pişkin, who was detained on Monday after visiting the HDP co-chair in prison, was released on probation by a Bursa court on Wednesday.

Pişkin, who is also a politician at the HDP İstanbul branch, was detained at his home and taken to Bursa on Monday. Some of his personal belongings were also confiscated by the police.

Before Pişkin’s detention, some media outlets such as the pro-government newspapers Takvim and Sabah ran stories claiming that Pişkin would convey Demirtaş’s messages to the German media for propaganda purposes.

Demirtaş, along with the party’s other co-chair, Figen Yüksekdağ, and eight other deputies, were arrested in early November after they refused to testify about alleged crimes linked to “terrorist propaganda.”
