Seventy-one people including 28 public officials have been detained in connection with a terrorist attack that claimed the life of a former district governor in Mardin’s Derik district last week, according to a statement from Mardin Governor Mustafa Yaman on Tuesday.
A bomb attack that took place at the office of the district governor in Derik last Thursday injured three people including the former Derik district governor, Muhammed Fatih Safitürk.
Safitürk succumbed to his injuries on Friday.
The former district governor was appointed as a trustee to the Derik Municipality in Mardin in September.
The Kurdistan Workers’ Party’s (PKK) youth branch Civil Protection Units (YPS) claimed responsibility for the attack, which according to a statement from the Mardin Governor’s Office, was carried out using homemade explosives.
