Democratic Regions Party (DBP) Co-chairperson Sebahat Tuncel, who was taken to a hospital after police intervened in a demonstration in front of the Diyarbakır Courthouse on Friday afternoon, has been arrested by a Diyarbakır court.

Police used force to intervene in the sit-in in front of the Diyarbakır Courthouse to protest the detention of pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) deputies in the early hours of Friday and detained dozens of people.

Tuncel, who is also a former deputy, was reportedly injured by the police when she was being detained. She was subsequently hospitalized.

Tuncel was taken to a courthouse on Sunday where a prosecutor referred her to court and she was subsequently arrested.

Turkish courts on Friday arrested nine HDP deputies including the party’s Co-chairs Selahattin Demirtaş and Figen Yüksekdağ who were detained in the early hours of Friday following police raids on their homes.

HDP spokesperson Ayhan Bilgen announced at a news conference following a two-day-long party meeting in Diyarbakır on Sunday that his party decided to halt parliamentary work due to the crackdown on the party.
