Unidentified men fired at the official car of Handan Toprak Benli, mayor of İstanbul’s Avcılar district from the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), which was parked in front of her residence in Avcılar on Wednesday.
Benli’s car had been parked by her driver in front of her house after she left work. No one was injured in the 7:30 p.m. attack, but a bullet pierced the windshield and landed in the driver’s seat.
Police have launched an investigation into the incident.
On Saturday CHP Deputy Chairman Bülent Tezcan was shot in the foot at a restaurant in the Aegean city of Aydın. After he was detained police shortly after the incident, Alparslan Sargın, the man who attacked Tezcan, said in his testimony that he warned the opposition politician to speak politely about President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
